The intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek will reshape the logistics landscape of western Poland.

Western Poland is steadily strengthening its position as one of the most important regions for logistics, industry and distribution. Its proximity to the German border, the A2 motorway, the S3 expressway and a well-developed rail infrastructure creates excellent conditions for new investments. A further boost will come from the intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek, which is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2028.
Loconi Intermodal S.A., one of Poland’s leading intermodal operators and a member of the PSA International group, has launched the construction of a new intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek. The terminal is being built alongside the E20 railway line, which forms part of the TEN-T network, near the A2 and S3. The project covers approximately 9.4 ha, comprising four transhipment tracks and a storage yard with a capacity of around 4,500 TEU. This infrastructure has the potential to significantly boost intermodal transport capacity in western Poland and strengthen the region’s role in European supply chains.

A new boost for the region’s economy
The terminal’s significance will not be limited to container transhipment alone. The development of intermodal infrastructure has an impact on the entire ecosystem surrounding it. As transport volumes increase, so does the demand for first- and last-mile road transport, 3PL services, warehousing, consolidation, distribution and light manufacturing.
For businesses, this means the opportunity to build more flexible supply chains. Long-haul journeys can be carried out by rail, whilst road transport is responsible for delivering the container to a warehouse, distribution centre or production facility. In the coming years, this model is likely to gain in importance as the need to reduce emissions, shorten handling times and increase the resilience of supply chains grows.

Increased demand for warehouse and production facilities
An intermodal terminal is no substitute for a warehouse. Goods arriving by rail often require further handling – storage, order picking, repackaging, consolidation or preparation for distribution. Therefore, the development of the terminal may increase demand for warehouses, logistics centres and production facilities not only in Zbąszynek itself, but also across the entire region.
Locations offering quick access to the A2, S3, the Polish-German border and rail infrastructure will be of particular importance. In this context, the potential of Świebodzin, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Zielona Góra and the western part of the Poznań conurbation is growing. For investors, it will become increasingly important not only to have access to an expressway or motorway, but also to be able to efficiently integrate road transport with rail.

BTS Development’s projects are in line with this trend
BTS Development is developing warehouse and production facilities specifically in western Poland. Among BTS Development’s investment projects are, amongst others, BTS Park Świebodzin VI, BTS Park Gorzów Wielkopolski and BTS Park Poznań West.
What they have in common is access to major transport corridors and the ability to serve both the domestic market and Western Europe. The development of the terminal in Zbąszynek may further enhance the appeal of such locations for logistics operators and manufacturing companies seeking flexible space in a well-connected part of the country.

What might happen over the next 3–5 years?
The coming years will be a period of preparing the market to capitalise on new opportunities. Even before the terminal opens, companies will be able to analyse locations for future warehouses, distribution centres and production facilities, whilst investors can secure land and plan the next stages of their projects.
From 2028 onwards, the terminal’s significance will be assessed on the basis of actual freight flows and developing rail connections. If regular intermodal services are established around Zbąszynek, the benefits will extend to a much wider area than the town itself.
Western Poland is increasingly ceasing to be merely a transit region. It is becoming a place where goods are stored, processed, consolidated and distributed onwards to European markets. The intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek could significantly accelerate this process, reinforcing the importance of the entire A2-S3 corridor for new logistics and manufacturing investments.

The intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek – questions and answers
When will the intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek open?
The terminal is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2028.
What is intermodal transport in the context of this investment?
It is the transport of containers using several modes of transport (long-distance rail + lorries for the final leg to the warehouse) without the goods themselves being transhipped.
Why is Zbąszynek a key location for logistics?
It lies on the E20 main railway line (part of the TEN-T network) and in close proximity to the A2 and S3 motorway junction on the border with Germany.
