In today’s article, we will try to find the largest warehouse halls in the world and other massive steel halls. We will check which companies use them in their operations, their sizes, and whether there was a need for any special structural solutions for these warehouses. The size of some of the record holders in terms of volume is, however, hard to describe. It’s enough to mention that the largest halls house enormous items or vehicles, and we could easily fit… the Eiffel Tower inside them!

Tesla Gigafactory 1 Production Hall – 492,000 m²

Gigafactory 1 is a massive production hall where Tesla manufactures batteries and other components used in electric vehicles. It is located in Nevada, USA. The multi-story warehouse and production facility covers nearly 200,000 square meters.

However, Tesla’s plans do not stop there. Their Gigafactory 1 is set to nearly double in size, giving it a total usable area of over a billion square feet – over 92,000 m². If that weren’t enough, the entire facility will be powered by renewable energy sources.

Boeing Everett Hall – 398,000 m²

The world’s largest airplanes also require the largest production halls. This seems to be the assumption made by those managing Boeing. To produce airplanes in Washington (USA), they use a hall with nearly four hundred thousand square meters. Since the interior of a Jumbo Jet (Boeing 747) could serve as a large warehouse, constructing a warehouse hall large enough to fit such machines must have been a major challenge.

Hala Boeing Everett

Although Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 in Nevada has a larger area, Boeing’s airplane factory holds the record for volume. Due to the great height of the production hall, it boasts 13.3 million cubic meters. This is the largest building in the world in this regard! Even more impressive is the fact that this massive steel hall was built in 1967, more than half a century ago. Today, Boeing manufactures its flagship airplane, the 787 Dreamliner, there. Interestingly, Boeing’s airplane wings are made in another factory, although it is located right next door. The Composite Wing Center, though it only takes up a quarter of the size of the massive Dreamliner factory, still covers about 100,000 square meters.

Amazon NQY1 Fulfillment Center – 334,000 m²

Amazon is currently the largest seller in the e-commerce industry. It’s no surprise that the warehouses they use for logistics are also of impressive size. Amazon’s logistics centers total over 16 million square meters! Many of the warehouses exceed 100,000 square meters in size, but the largest one is four times that. Built in 2021 in Tennessee, USA, it has five floors, and its warehouse space is highly automated. This warehouse, along with its office space of almost 10,000 m², is just one of several massive facilities in the state.

Hall 1B at Volkswagen Factory – 297,000 m²

Our list includes both large warehouse and industrial halls. The European record holder falls into the latter category. The Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, is also the brand’s headquarters. The design of the warehouse hall had to accommodate the production of up to 800,000 cars per year. This massive factory employs 70,000 people and also houses a theme park dedicated to the brand.

The factory includes Hall 1B, a warehouse covering nearly 300,000 square meters.

Michelin Woodruff U70 Warehouse – 279,000 m²

In 2019, the French tire manufacturer opened a massive warehouse and distribution facility. Located in South Carolina, USA, near Greenville, the Michelin warehouse is built using modules and consists of five segments. Every day, 200,000 tires are distributed from here. The warehouse is fully automated, with substantial support from machines.

Nike North American Logistics Campus – 260,000 m²

Nike’s North American Logistics Campus in Tennessee, USA, was completed in 2015. Since then, it has served as Nike’s distribution hub for the region. A key feature of the warehouse is the massive conveyor belt network, helping to transport products on belts stretching over 53 kilometers.

The Nike warehouse distributes apparel, footwear, and sporting equipment, mainly to wholesalers and Nike stores. From there, products purchased online are shipped out. A similar Nike warehouse also exists in Europe. The Belgian “The Court” warehouse spans nearly 140,000 square meters and uses renewable energy sources.

John Deere Distribution Center – 242,000 m²

This is another massive warehouse located in the United States, in Illinois. It is responsible for distributing parts for agricultural machinery and other John Deere equipment. Interestingly, this giant steel warehouse is located in the town of Milan. It opened in 1975 and has been expanded multiple times over nearly five decades. Today, it houses about half a million different parts for various John Deere agricultural and construction machines. It also stores parts for older and even historic machines. All parts are shipped 24/7.

Inex Sipoo Logistics Warehouse – 222,000 m²

Almost as large as the John Deere warehouse is the distribution center of the Finnish co-operative S Group. It is not only the largest building in Finland but also one of Europe’s record-holders. Around one-third of Finland’s food products pass through this facility!

Every day, about a thousand trucks leave the building, with 25% using maritime transport via the nearby Vuosaari port. A large portion of the warehouse is refrigerated, allowing the storage of temperature-sensitive products. This very versatile warehouse handles the distribution of food, as well as other products such as clothing, electronics, and even car parts.

Target Warehouse – 186,000 m²

The warehouse in Savannah, Georgia, USA, belongs to the Target retail chain. Construction of this warehouse was completed in 2006, and it is the largest distribution center for Target stores. Although the company is not well-known in Poland, it is one of the largest retail chains in the world. Both in their stores and in this massive warehouse in Georgia, you can find products ranging from food to appliances, office supplies, and fashion items. Similar-sized warehouses in this network can also be found in Washington (over 180,000 m²) and Virginia (just under 170,000 m²).

Amazon LCY2 Logistics Warehouse – 186,000 m²

Our ranking also includes the largest European logistics warehouse of Amazon. The LCY2 facility is located in London, England. Interestingly, the name of the facility indicates its location – LCY stands for “London City” (the nearest airport to the warehouse). The “2” indicates that this is the second warehouse Amazon built in the area. It is one of the most technologically advanced warehouses in the world and one of Amazon’s most sophisticated facilities. Over a thousand robots work in this warehouse.
